Attorney Profile

Derrick G. Hamlin, Esq., a Baltimore native, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Morgan State University and a Masters of Science degree in Chemistry from The Johns Hopkins University. He is also a graduate of Catholic University Columbus School of Law. An attorney with knowledge and expertise in advanced science is who you want on your side when your case involves forensic science, like DNA, drug analysis, gunshot residue and fingerprints.

Mr. Hamlin has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the District of Columbia and the state and federal bars of Maryland. He has worked for and is mentored by a nationally recognized, highly-profiled, civil rights and entertainment attorney.  He is currently on the executive board of the Monumental City Bar Association, and served as President in 2013.  He has argued at all levels of the State of Maryland appellate court and remains active in the community.

Prior to forming his law firm, Mr. Hamlin worked in many chemistry laboratories, plants and research centers, synthesizing and analyzing drugs and chemicals. During his seven-year tenure at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office as a Patent Examiner, Mr. Hamlin analyzed leading-edge chemical technology.  Based on this in-depth knowledge, Mr. Hamlin regularly files and receives trademark registrations and copyrights for his clients.

Mr. Hamlin has successfully defended clients in cases involving murder, drugs, guns and other misdemeanors and felonies. He has handled hundreds of criminal law cases throughout the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia with positive results. His knowledge and experience in quantitative and qualitative chemical analysis allows him to pinpoint mistakes often made by crime scene investigators, forensic scientist and police chemists, particularly regarding DNA, firearm, CDS and prescription drug cases.

To build on his knowledge of the law, he has earned over 300 continuing education credits in various areas of criminal defense.  Although often referred to as the Baltimore lawyer, Attorney Hamlin has defended criminal cases in most counties in Maryland, including Anne Arundel County, Baltimore City, Baltimore County, Calvert County, Cecil County, Dorchester County, Harford County, Howard County, Montgomery County, St. Mary’s and Prince George’s County.

In the field of civil litigation, Mr. Hamlin has won and settled many lawsuits in both the state and federal courts.  He successfully secured a jury trial verdict for over $100,000 in his first personal injury case on behalf of a college student against one of Maryland’s major car insurance carries.  In his civil second trial, he successfully obtained a jury trial verdict of $50,000 against a Baltimore City police officer for battery, false arrest and false imprisonment.  Recently, Attorney Hamlin secured a jury verdict of $8,600,000 in a wrongful death case.  Prior to forming his law practice, Mr. Hamlin had worked on and with several multi-million dollar lawsuits and businesses.

In the field of entertainment, Mr. Hamlin currently represents a wide range of clients – from news reporters to R&B groups.  He has drafted recording contracts and joint venture contracts, and other documents needed by recording companies, management companies and artists. His seven years of intellectual property law experience has allowed him to successfully file several copyrights and trademarks for movies, albums, clothing lines and entertainment companies.  He has also formed many corporations and limited liability companies (LLC), while serving the legal needs of many entertainment businesses in Maryland.
